| Roll Off - Don't Chop! - the Throttle At the Freddie Spencer Riding School, we use the term “Zone 1” to encapsulate a series of actions that a rider performs at the entrance to, and up to the apex of, a corner. One of the first things a rider must do when approaching a corner is to roll out of the throttle. This performs several functions: obviously, it helps slow the motorcycle; it prepares the rider for braking; and it transfers weight to the front of the motorcycle, decreasing rake and trail and preparing the bike for turn-in. Often times
new students will chop the throttle abruptly, which causes unnecessary
motion, transfers weight much too quickly and upsets the chassis. Make
sure to roll out of the throttle using a controlled, damped motion, moving
it all the way to the stop before applying the brakes. This will ensure
a smooth, efficient beginning to the corner process. |
